What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure that removes the skin’s top layers using a chemical solution. Following a peel, skin grows back smoother. Chemical peels can help you address dissatisfaction with your skin regarding:
- Wrinkles.
- Scarring.
- Skin discoloration.
- Hyperpigmentation
- Photoaging.
Many chemical peels can be used in conjunction with other skin treatments.
Chemical peels are graded by depth. Here’s a guide for what to expect when choosing the three levels of chemical peels available:
Light Chemical Peel
Considered a “superficial” peel, a light chemical peel removes the outer layer of the skin called the epidermis. Light peels are perfect for addressing dryness, uneven skin tone, fine wrinkles, and acne. Light peels can safely be done every two to five weeks.
Medium Chemical Peel
A medium peel removes skin cells from the epidermis, upper, and middle layers of skin. Medium peels are ideal for treating wrinkles, acne scarring, and uneven skin tone.
Deep Chemical Peel
Deep chemical peels remove deeper layers of the skin. They are ideal for everything from intense wrinkles to precancerous growths.
Following a chemical peel, it’s common for skin to be red, irritated, and dry. However, the intensity of the recovery period needed varies by peel type. Skin typically needs one to seven days to fully recover following a light peel. Most people feel comfortable “returning to the world” immediately after a light peel.
A medium peel often produces redness, swelling, and a stinging sensation. It’s important to leave skin bare of cosmetics for five to seven days following a medium peel. Deep peels can produce redness, swelling, burning, and swelling. Following a deep peel, dressing is applied to the skin to optimize healing. It takes two weeks for new skin to develop following a deep chemical peel. You may be provided with special medications and ointments during this period to facilitate healing.
Rest assured that you’ll be given all the information you need to safely tend to your skin following a peel of any level when you visit us here at Aesthetics 360 Lash & MedSpa. You’ll be provided with information regarding pain management, how to keep skin away from sun exposure, and when you can resume your normal skincare routine. Avoiding direct exposure to the sun is vital during the tender recovery phase following a skin peel. Our staff of Licensed Medical Esthetician, RNs, and NPs will provide you with personalized attention from the moment you book a consultation for a peel. Prior to your chemical peel, we’ll go over your full health history with you to ensure that you’re an ideal candidate for a peel.
